A re-recording that I really enjoyed.
A lot of bands that I've listened to have tried their hand at re-recording old music over the years. Of course you've got covers, the ever-popular thing to do which sometimes I can kinda enjoy and other times just make me kinda cringe (it's perfectly fine if ya like that example, I just personally don't think that The World Alive sounds very great doing a Kanye song). This isn't about that though, this is about redos of albums.
I've heard a few retakes on albums that I enjoy, for example I was a fan of Blind Guardian's "Revisited" version of Somewhere Far Beyond because I thought the modern/cleaner production and whatnot worked quite well! I've also heard a few that I didn't care for as much, I still listen to the janky original version of Sonata Arctica's Ecliptica over the 15th Anniversary version because I just don't think the new instrumentation and mixing works well with the classic tracks. Ain't that funny?
A while ago one of my favorite bands, The Amity Affliciton, announced they'd be re-recording one of my favorite albums they did, Let The Ocean Take Me. I got a little scared when I heard that. Their sound has changed a fair bit since that album. Will it be any good? Then they put this out and I was a little less scared because damn, that sounded kinda good. How will the rest sound?
Today's the day that the whole Redux album came out. I think my buddy sending me WHY DOES THIS ALBUM SOUND THIS DAMN GOOD over Discord pretty much summarizes how I feel. The deeper vocals work really well, I know they're partially caused by sad things but it feels a little more mature in a cool way. The re-recorded instruments sound great. The mix brings up a lot of said re-recorded instrumental parts, some of them that were pretty damn hard to hear in the old version of the album, while not screwing up anything in relation to the vocals. There are some added little parts that sound really sweet, on and on...
I'm happy. That's it. That's all this page is. It's just me saying I'm happy. I'll update this with a picture of the LP when it comes in the mail lol
